Academy changes Visual Effects category from three to five nominees

e8378afd1700x250 Academy changes Visual Effects category from three to five nominees

hollywood-stars.info: The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finalized the rules for the 83rd Academy Awards at its most recent meeting (June 22). The most significant change is in the Visual Effects category, which will now feature five nominees rather than three.

Since 1963, when the Special Effects award was discontinued and new separate categories for achievements in visual effects and sound effects were established, the only period during which it was possible to have five visual effects nominees was 1977 through 1979. In only one of those years (1979) were five achievements actually recognized. Between 1980 and 1995, two or three productions could be nominated; since 1996 the rules have dictated there be exactly three nominees.

In the Animated Feature Film category, the rule governing running time for a motion picture to qualify was changed from at least 70 minutes to greater than 40 minutes, which is consistent with the running time requirements for feature films in all other categories. The running time for a motion picture to qualify as an animated, live action or documentary short film has been and continues to be a maximum of 40 minutes. The previous 70-minute threshold for an animated feature had left a gap for films that ran between 40 and 70 minutes, effectively preventing them from being able to qualify as either features or shorts.

Also in the Animated Feature Film category, a sentence regarding motion capture was added to clarify the definition of an animated film. The language now reads: “An animated feature film is defined as a motion picture with a running time of greater than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture’s running time.”

Other modifications of the 83rd Academy Awards rules include normal date changes and minor “housekeeping” changes.

Rules are reviewed annually by individual branch and category committees. The Awards Rules Committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Governors for approval.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Barry Levinson to direct Columbia Pictures’ ‘Brother Jack’

f947520a4f00x250 Barry Levinson to direct Columbia Pictures’ ‘Brother Jack’

hollywood-stars.info: Academy Award(r)-winning director Barry Levinson is attached to helm the film “Brother Jack” for Columbia Pictures, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures.

“Brother Jack,” based on the life of human rights activist Jack Healey, is the coming of age story of an idealist who leaves the priesthood for a life on the streets and successfully wages a one man war to elevate the issue of human rights. The screenplay is being written by Harley Peyton, with a current rewrite by Kelly Masterson. The film will be produced by Mosaic and Jack Healey.

Levinson most recently directed and executive produced “You Don’t Know Jack,” a biopic of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, for HBO, which earned 15 Emmy nominations this morning, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie.

Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “Barry Levinson is one of the industry’s most thoughtful, accomplished and acclaimed directors. His work chronicling the life of Dr. Jack Kevorkian was brilliant and we think his take on how one social activist can influence a nation will be equally engaging and compelling.”

Healey is the world-renowned human rights activist and pioneer. An effective and innovative leader in the human rights movement for over 25 years, Healey helped move the topic of human rights from closed-door diplomatic negotiations to widespread awareness, public debate, and direct citizen action. Colleagues credit him with making human rights a major focus of governments, advocacy organization, and individuals around the world.

Called “Mr. Human Rights” by U.S. News and World Report, Healey brought human rights to the global stage by his creative use of media and enlistment of world-class musical talent as advocates and spokespersons as Executive Director of Amnesty International USA for 12 years.

He currently heads the Human Rights Action Network, a non-profit based out of Washington, D.C. Using the arts and new technologies, the organization works creatively to develop new strategies to stop human rights abuses. Healey’s goals include spreading awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, restoring Aung San Suu Kyi to power in Burma, creating innovative, forceful, effective solutions to assist victims in protecting themselves, supporting growing human rights groups all over the world, and creating a fund to get people out of harm’s way in exceptional human rights abuse cases.

“Brother Jack” will be overseen at Columbia by Belgrad and Jonathan Kadin. David Householter will oversee on behalf of Mosaic along with George Gatins. Levinson and Masterson are represented by ICM.

Hollywood TV Roundup: A look at the Emmy Noms

e3ae78f46a00x250 Hollywood TV Roundup: A look at the Emmy Noms

hollywood-stars.info: “Glee” fever is so strong that it swayed Emmy voters who lauded the TV show with 19 nominations. But that wasn’t the only show to catch their eye: HBO’s miniseries “The Pacific” harpooned 24 nods.

In years past, the Emmys use to favor those series which were on the air for seasons on end, often times honoring them later in their run. But in recent years, the organization has become open minded to frosh shows, evident in its embrace of Fox’s “Glee,” ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.”

That said, the Emmys continue to have its favorites, i.e. “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “30 Rock.”

The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will air on August 29 on NBC with Jimmy Fallon hosting from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. For the first time in 30 years, the awards show will air live all over the nation.

In terms of those series that aired season finales, Emmy voters favored ABC’s “Lost” in the top categories over Fox’s “24.”

New shows predominantly received some love in the supporting actor categories which saw a majority of the “Modern Family” cast in competition: Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara were recognized. “Glee” co-stars Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer received nods. “Good Wife” co-star Christine Baranski was lauded.

The nominees for best reality included CBS’ “The Amazing Race,” Fox’s “American Idol,” ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” Bravo’s “Project Runway” and “Top Chef.”

Among those in the best variety, music or comedy series slot, Conan O’Brien from NBC’s “Tonight Show” will vie against seven-time winner Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” as well as “The Colbert Report,” HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

Some outlets are reporting a reduced number of snubs, but that’s not true, for they abounded — greatly. TNT’s drama-edy “Men of a Certain Age” and its leading man Ray Romano were shut out of the drama and best actor categories (though co-star Andre Braugher earned a supporting actor nod). FX’s “Justified” was unjustly not recognized. ABC’s comedy “Cougar Town” and leading gal Courteney Cox didn’t find a destination on the list. And HBO’s “Treme” and “Big Love” were overlooked. Please let us know what favorite shows of yours weren’t honored.

8a234995bd00x250 Lindsay Lohan “denies tampering” SCRAM device, says lawyer

hollywood-stars.info: Lindsay Lohan got a visit from her friend Kim Kardashian last night instead of attending her belated birthday. Finally, she did something beneficial for herself.

However, sources have told TMZ that Lohan has allegedly tried to tamper with the SCRAM device at least two times to prevent it from reading her alcohol level. They also report that Lohan tried to block it the night of the MTV Movie Awards, when the bracelet went off reading more than a .03 blood alcohol level.

Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, responded by saying, “Lindsay adamantly denies tampering with the device. There are a number of people who were with her who could attest to the fact that she never tampered with her bracelet and there are well-documented problems with the SCRAM bracelet and the accuracy of its readings.”

“It’s exceptionally rare to discover a film that so powerfully captures the spirit of its time; “The Social Network” is such a film. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history… but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications. From director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin comes “The Social Network,” a film that proves you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies. David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin have focused their lenses on a story of friendship, loyalty, and betrayal, with a multifaceted character at the center who is as complex as he is clever. This is just the kind of film that our audience wants to see and we’re thrilled to be hosting the world premiere.”

“As much as I like acting,” Baldwin tells CNN,” I know that I would love to have a different life. A private life … I think that doing this now for a living has become really, really hard.
